We are dedicated to vigorously representing victims of the drug Propulsid.
PROPULSID: INJURY OR DEATH
Propulsid was a drug used to prevent acid reflux and heartburn (gastroesophogeal reflux).
The generic name is cisapride, and it was marketed by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
The side effects which caused the drug to be removed from the market can be very serious, and can even cause death.
Some serious side effects include: ventricular tachycardia (V tach), ventricular fibrillation (V fib), and QT wave prolongation. Sadly, over 100 deaths have already been reported.
The risk of serious side effects increases if (1) certain drugs are used concurrently, including antibiotics, antiarrythmics,
antidepressents, and even grape fruit juice, or (2) the drug is given to patients who also suffer from certain other illnesses.
PROPULSID: THE LAW SUITS
A number of lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts for injuries or death caused by Propulsid.
The vast majority of the cases name only the manufactures (Janssen and J&J) as defendants, and these have been transferred to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, the Honorable U.S. District Court Judge Eldon E. Fallon presiding (In Re: Propulsid Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 1355, E.D. La). The cases have been transferred for the purpose of pretrial discovery, and when discovery is completed, the cases will be sent back to their original federal court for trial. You can access the Propulsid rulings and Orders of Judge Fallon http://propulsid.laed.uscourts.gov/. Cases involving defendants other than the manufacturer, such as prescribing physicians, remain in various state courts.
