Press RELEASE

John Marshall High School Hosts Banquet

John Marshall High School had the honor of hosting a banquet attended by Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Gene Lamont, 1996 National League All-Star team member Jason Kendall, catcher Keith Osik and broadcasters Lanny Frattare and Bob Walk.

The banquet was one of several events being sponsored by the Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose program on Tuesday, January 28.  Prior to the banquet, 150 John Marshall students participated in a Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose assembly.  John Marshall won an assembly by being one of the first seven schools to administer the Booze Buster quiz, which tests students’ knowledge of the consequences of drunk driving.

The banquet was emceed by WTOV's Jim Forbes. Immediately prior to the banquet, a press conference was held at John Marshall to give the local news agencies the rare opportunity of one on one interviews with the Pirates.  Pirate owner Kevin McClatchy also attended the banquet.  Following the banquet, the Pirates sponsored a free autograph session in the Nailer Room of the Civic Center. The autograph session, was open to the public, and cosponsored by the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

Gold, Khourey & Turak attorney and Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose Program Coordinator Rich Wilson selected John Marshall to host the event because the school showed outstanding interest in the program.

Students attending Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose assemblies had the opportunity to meet players from the Pittsburgh Pirates and interact with West Virginia State police while learning about the criminal, legal and financial consequences of drunk driving.  Wilson moderates the assemblies and awards Pirate memorabilia and Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose T-shirts when students correctly answer questions about the ramifications of drunk driving.  High schools across the Ohio Valley competed for one of seven assemblies.  The other high schools which won assemblies were Weir, Bishop Donahue, Cameron, Barnesville, Wheeling Park and Steubenville.

The Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose reception committee of Barnesville, Cameron, Weir, Bishop Donahue, Steubenville and Wheeling Park also attended the luncheon.  Door prizes were given to students attending the banquet.  Students won a pair of day game season tickets, autographed baseballs, Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose T-shirts and a Pirate hat or jersey.

The Booze and Cruise, You'll Lose program has is sponsoring a field trip to the April 23rd Pirate-Phillies game. Students are selling tickets for half price to the game.  Parents and students taking the field trip will have the opportunity to meet players, tour the Pirate and Steeler locker rooms, sit in a box seat and see their school on score board.  The two students that sell the most tickets will throw out and catch the game's first pitch.  A choral group from the school that sells the most tickets will sing the National Anthem with WTOV's Jim Forbes.
